The Frankfurt Eissporthalle opened on 19 December, 1981 as one of the most modern facilities of its kind in Germany, offering 9,075 m2 of rinks and seating for 6,996. It is still the meeting point for fans of ice sports in the Rhine-Main area.
Every year, over half a million people flock towards the Eissporthalle. Not only to enjoy winter sports or the ice hockey games of the Frankfurt Löwen but also to attend the numerous ice-free events.
Rinks
– Fun on 9,075 m².
The largest interconnected skating rink in Germany offers the right level for everyone.
The perimeter boards in the large and small rinks, as well as in the covered outside rink, give novices, in particular, the necessary confidence for their first steps on the ice.
Background music in the large rink ensures you find your rhythm for skating and you can always take a break in the “Cool Running” bar. Even those not directly involved in the action on the ice can enjoy unforgettable moments – for example at top-level tournaments or watching figure skating.
LARGE RINK
The Löwen’s home venue feature an area of around 1,800 meters m². This also offers enough space for tomorrow’s figure skating stars to train. And for kindergarten groups and school classes to really let off steam.
SMALL RINK
The 675 m² rink offers space for skating novices, Bavarian-style curling and club curling. For over 15 years now, ice skating courses have been on offer in the small rink every Wednesday.
OUTER RINK
The external rink offers a complete 400 m long circuit of the stadium with a width of twelve meters, connected to the inner rink by a smooth expanse of ice.
COVERED OUTER RINK
The outer rink, with a curved membrane roof, is a versatile-use outdoor location and is used primarily as a training area by Frankfurt clubs, with and without ice. When hired for special events, one of a variety of floor covering options is required, with the costs to be borne by the organiser.

FOUR DECADES OF FRANKFURT EISSPORTHALLE AT BORNHEIMER HANG.
1980 – GROUNDBREAKING
On 11 June, 1980, the first sod was turned for the Eissporthalle. A “community centre on ice” which fulfils a variety of different functions: Whether as a destination for family outings, a professional sports temple, a club house, a talent pool, an event location, training grounds or a venue for world-famous stars – all under one roof.
1981 – TOPPING-OUT CEREMONY
The construction period for one of the most modern ice skating rinks in Germany ran to only 18 months. And it was completed within the planned budget of 41 million German marks. From the beginning, the design by the architecture and engineering office Heil & Deyle was geared towards multiple use.
1981 – OPENING
At the opening of the new Eissporthalle am Bornheimer Hang, on 19 December, 1981, such stars as Marika Kilius or the former world-class figure skating pair Margret Göbl and Franz Ningel as well as other international ice skating stars put in an appearance.
1986 – ADDITION OF TENNIS COURT
An ice hockey field covered by a marquee was turned into tennis courts in the summer. The top sport of the 80s immediately became part of the act in the Eissporthalle! First to serve: the tennis legends Steffi Graf und Claudia Cohde-Kilsch.
2001 – MORE SPACE!
Professionals like the Lions and 19 amateur clubs were delighted by the 500 m2 expansion. This improved training conditions enormously. Frankfurt’s citizens and guests enjoyed an even better experience and the city demonstrated the standing in which the sport was held.
2018 – MAJOR OVERHAUL
36 years after its original opening, the hall was thoroughly refurbished, modernised and enhanced, both inside and out: The City of Frankfurt was aware that the Eissporthalle had become indispensible – both for leisure pursuits and for sporting activities – and invested EUR 3.7 million.
THE EISSPORTHALLE HAS WRITTEN SPORTING HISTORY — BOTH NATIONALLY AND INTERNATIONALLY!
1981 – ICE HOCKEY INTERNATIONAL
On 27 December, 1981, the first international ice hockey match in the new Eissporthalle ended in defeat for the West German team at the hands of the Olympic selection of the Soviet Union, with a final score of two goals to seven. But this never dampened Frankfurt citizens’ passion for ice hockey.
1983 – INTERNATIONAL SKATING EXHIBITION
In spring, a world-class skating exhibition was held. In the revue, such stars as European Champion and World Championships silver medallist Norbert Schramm, Kati Witt, the freshly-crowned European Champion, Rudi Cerne and many others displayed their top form to the enthusiastic spectators.
1991 – GALA ON ICE
A real crowd-puller for over a decade: The spectacular Ice Revue with the greats of international figure skating delighted millions of fans. For many years, the televised show, the “ARD-Gala on Ice“, was recorded in the run-up to Christmas and broadcast during the festive season.
1992 – PROFESSIONAL ICE HOCKEY
Hear the Frankfurt Lions roar! Regular highlights are the home games of the professional ice hockey team. Thanks to the “Lions”, it is almost impossible to imagine Frankfurt without ice hockey at German Ice Hockey League level.
1999 – HESSEN TANZT
Since 1983 the world’s biggest dance sport event has been taking place in the Eissporthalle, bringing the venue to fever pitch with standard and Latin dance.
2003 – KART RACING ON ICE
After winning his sixth Formula 1 World Championship, Michael Schumacher came to Frankfurt, to the delight of 3,500 fans. Probably the world’s all-time best racing driver, he confidently completed lap after lap on the glass-like track. All the proceeds of the kart race went to charity.
2010 – END OF AN ERA FOR THE LIONS
Difficult times: The long-standing but heavily-indebted club had its licence withdrawn by the DEL. The future of the Eissporthalle was initially unclear. In the same year, a successor was formed from the Young Lions junior club, the Löwen Frankfurt, which went on to become successfully established in the following years.
2016 – DART-WM
Bull’ s eye – for years, Frankfurt has been the venue for the World Cup of Darts. The sixth PDC World Cup was held from 2 to 5 June, 2016. Title holder was the team from England. Dart for dart, thousands of spectators cheered on the teams representing 32 nations; the atmosphere was right on target!
2022 – LÖWEN PROMOTION PERFECT
After over a decade, the Löwen are finally back in the DEL. With victory in the DEL2 Playoff Final in April 2022, the Löwen Frankfurt secured promotion into the DEL for the 2022/23 season. The public is looking forward to an exciting season!
STANDING OVATIONS FOR EVENTS THAT FRANKFURT WILL NEVER FORGET
1986 – JOE COCKER ROCKS!
Unmistakeable grating voice and legendary show by the Woodstock celebrity: The Blues & Soul rock great really fired up the audience at Frankfurt Eissporthalle with such hits as “You Can Leave Your Hat On”- 6,000 euphoric fans gave voice to their enthusiasm.
1986 – PRINCE & THE REVOLUTION
On 26 August, the world star played his very first European concert –in the Frankfurt Eissporthalle! With “Kiss”, the most successful lifted single, the multi-facetted artist astounded his audience with his own individual interpretations from R&B, Pop and Rock.
1989 – PEACE RALLY
50 years after the beginning of World War II, the Peace Relay made a stop in Frankfurt and thousands took part in the peace rally. Almost 70 of the 350 Olympians from Seoul lent their names in support of the rallying call.

ICE PENGUIN WITH REAL LIFE ROLE MODEL
The jolly ice penguins have a real-life role model: For years now, the Frankfurt Eissporthalle has assumed sponsorship for a Humboldt penguin in Frankfurt Zoo.
A POETIC CONNECTION
Skating is in Frankfurt’s DNA: Even Johann Wolfgang von Goethe found inspiration while skating on the River Main!
HARDWORKING TEAM
From December 1981 to December 2021, the rinks have been resurfaced a total of 253,080 times.
LOVE ON THE ICE
More than one example can be found: Youngsters meeting while enjoying a few hours skating, years later hearing a marriage proposal while out on the ice, made over the rink’s PA system. And now out skating as a family.
JUSTIN BIEBER AS GUEST IN THE ICE RINK
In 2016, before his concert in the Festhalle concert hall on 16 November, he took part in a training session with the ice hockey juniors of the Frankfurter Löwen in the Eissporthalle.
